About Cashmere

Cashmere wool fiber is obtained from “Cashmere goats.” Historically, fine-haired Cashmere goats have been called Capra hircus laniger, as if they were a subspecies of the domestic goat Capra Hircus. Cashmere goats produce a double fleece that consists of a fine, soft undercoat or under-down of hair mingled with a straighter and much coarser outer coating of hair called Guard Hair. For the fine under-down to be sold and processed further, it must be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. After this separating process the resulting premium “cashmere” is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn.

The Designer

Florence Knoll

Florence Knoll

Florence Knoll Bassett (b. 1917) is one of the most iconic designers, and certainly one of the most iconic female designers and American designers, of the mid-century modern period. Her minimal, geometric designs expressed in her furniture, interior design style and architecture are still acclaimed today.

Knoll studied under and worked with powerful designers of her time, including Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer. Her product designs were based on the idea that furniture should be interpreted as architecture by transforming the principles of modern buildings into human-sized items. She also gained acclaim as an interior designer, helping define contemporary corporate style in post-war America.

Despite denying that she was a furniture designer, likely due to her holistic approach to design, Knoll’s creations and their inspirations may be some of the most mid-century pieces popularized today.

Customers Reviews

I just received my new

wendys333 - Verified Buyer - (5/5)
I just received my new Florence Knoll love seat, upholstered in medium gray cashmere wool, and I'm delighted! A perfect, sleek, sophisticated style, beautifully constructed, and virtually indistinguishable from the original, it blends with my American country antique and mid-century modern summer cottage in upstate N.Y. The sofa is very comfortable, both to sit on and recline. I love the stainless steel legs and tufted cushions. The staff at Rove was supportive and friendly through my 13 week wait for delivery to a very out-of-the-way locale! Worth the wait.
