Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Armchair is one of the most recognizable icons of 20th century modernism. At its time of creation, the use of curves and artificial material assigned it a “space age” classification, placing it on the set of the original Star Trek television series. Futuristic and classic, functional and graceful, the Tulip armchair set new standards for modern furniture design.
In this creation, Saarinen focused on clarifying form. Inspired by the stem of a tulip, he alleviated the sense of clutter underneath many tables and chairs of the time by utilizing a single pedestal stool. He also concentrated on an integrated style, enabling the Tulip chair to suit any number of modern surroundings.
This reproduction features a sculptured fiberglass shell and contrasting red leather seat pad. It is an ideal feature of any home or office, especially when combined with one or more other items in Saarinen’s extensive Tulip collection.
Eero Saarinen was known for his wide variety of styles, from geometric rationalism to curving silhouettes. His most famous works are the Womb Chair and Ottoman and the Tulip Table and Chair series. Fully entrenched in peak of the modern mid century movement, he was even friends with famed designers Charles and Ray Eames and Florence Knoll. Though he often worked in with his father, Eero was well established in his own right. He was contracted for projects for the White House, JFK Airport, the Gateway Arch and Dulles International Airport, among many others.
