The Designer

Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio (1932 – Present), the Finnish industrial and interior designer, has been a prominent name in design since the 1960s. His smart use of plastic and fiberglass distinguishes his designs, especially in his later works, as he can craft his pieces in any shape and color he can imagine. He is best known for his chairs, though he is also a notable toy and furniture designer for children.

The Ball Chair, also known as the Globe Chair, may be his most celebrate work to date. Created in 1963, the iconic industrial piece was created for his home and was based on Aarnio’s body. Often seen in fashion-forward and science fiction films, the piece is a fantastic example of design of timeless modern design.

Always maintaining that “design means constant renewal, realignment and growth,” Aarnio remains a relevant icon of mid-century modern style. His works are part of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA in New York and the Vitra Design Museum.

It's interesting you see this ball chair in magazines all the time, you dont ever really think it would end up in your space. I got one from here finally and it is well made. Best I can describe is that it creates a room within a room when you read in there,
